Have you ever taken a class at TIU and felt that a topic deserved deeper exploration? Perhaps you identified an issue during a lecture that raised new questions, or you found a theory that you wanted to examine beyond the classroom. Writing a thesis is an excellent way to turn that curiosity into a meaningful academic project. It is also a valuable experience for students who are considering graduate school or simply want to challenge themselves academically before graduation.
At TIU, undergraduate students can write a thesis through the Undergraduate Thesis Writing Seminar (UTWS). This seminar is designed to guide students through the research and writing process while allowing them to work closely with a faculty supervisor in their field of interest.
Eligibility and Application
To join UTWS, students must meet two basic requirements. First, you need to have completed at least 80 academic credits, ensuring that you have sufficient background knowledge in your discipline. Second, you must receive approval from a professor, who will typically act as your advisor during the thesis process. Don’t worry too much about this second condition, as it is not finalized until after you submit your proposal. Once these conditions are met, you can proceed with registration and begin planning your thesis journey.
If you are not yet eligible, this does not mean that you are behind. Instead, it is a great time to start preparing so that you can enter UTWS with confidence when the time comes.
Preparing for Thesis Writing
Preparation is key to a successful thesis. One of the most important steps is developing strong research habits early on. This includes reading academic articles, learning how to evaluate sources, and practicing academic writing on a regular basis. Try to identify topics that genuinely interest you and relate them to your major or minor fields of study.
If you already have a topic in mind, reading research papers and creating annotated reading lists (ARLs) can help you refine your research question and understand existing debates. Additionally, reaching out to a professor in your area of interest is highly recommended. Even an informal conversation can help clarify your ideas and may lead to a future supervisory relationship.
Thesis Proposal Timeline
For students completing the full four-year program, the standard timeline is straightforward. Students usually join UTWS in their 6th semester, submit a thesis proposal in the 7th semester with their professor’s signature, and then focus on writing the thesis in their 8th semester. This structure allows sufficient time for feedback, revisions, and in-depth research.
For students planning to graduate early, the schedule is more intensive. These students typically join UTWS and submit their proposal during the 6th semester, then dedicate their final semester to writing and completing the thesis.
If you are interested in writing a thesis, more information can be found in POTI’s document library under the title “Guidelines for Undergraduate Thesis.”
Writing a thesis at TIU is a demanding but highly rewarding experience. It strengthens research, writing, and critical thinking skills while giving students the chance to explore a topic that is personally meaningful. Whether your goal is graduate school or professional development, completing a thesis can be a defining highlight of your undergraduate career.
