Do you feel the heat coming? As summer arrives in Japan, maintaining healthy skin becomes very challenging, especially for us TIU students who commute daily in the very hot weather. From strong UV rays to rising humidity, summer heat can cause different skin problems such as breakouts, sunburn, and dryness. But don’t worry because we’ve got you covered. We will help you protect your skin, stay fresh, and feel confident all summer long.
Why Does Summer Damage Your Skin?
Our skin is exposed to several environmental stresses throughout the summer. Long periods of time spent outside can expose one to UV radiation, which can cause sunburn, black spots, and early aging. Acne is caused by clogged pores and increased sweat and oil brought on by heat and humidity. Dehydration from not drinking enough water can cause dryness and dullness even in humid weather. Moreover, using face masks or cosmetics for a long period of time, particularly in hot weather, can cause inflammation, or “maskne.” Additionally, it’s simple to overlook regular skin care practices when you’re a busy student, particularly since stress and sleep deprivation already have an impact on skin health.
How to Take Care of Your Skin in Summer?
1. Protect Your Skin from the Sun
Apply SPF 30+ and above sunscreen not only every morning but also on cloudy days. Try to reapply every 2–3 hours when outside. You can also use hats, sunglasses, umbrellas, and many more for physical protection from the sun.
2. Use Lightweight, Non-Sticky Products
There are different skincare products in the market, so try to switch from heavy creams to gel-based moisturizers. When looking for these products, look for non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) products.
3. Cleanse Gently and Regularly
After having a long day, don’t forget to wash your face to remove sweat, dirt, and sunscreen. Make sure to choose gentle cleansers to avoid over-drying.
4. Stay Hydrated from the Inside
This is already given, but drinking water consistently throughout the day. It can also be found in water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and citrus fruits.
5. Try Cooling Skincare
This is a nice tip to have. Storing toner or sheet masks in the fridge for a cooler effect on our skin. You can also use facial mists or cold rollers to feel more refreshed.
6. Evening Recovery Routine
Aside from applying sunscreen in the morning, having a proper routine at night keeps your skin very healthy. Use skincare products that cleanse, tone, and moisturize. When looking for these products, try to find calming ingredients like aloe vera or niacinamide to repair your skin.
7. Be Consistent
Being consistent takes a lot of time and practice, but to keep it very effective, make your skincare routine simple but regular. Last but not least, rest and low stress also help your skin glow!
